Glass master Michael Hunter will be travelling to the USA in May along side four other Scottish glass artists all of which are making the journey to New Jersey to demonstrate their unique skills and to give presentations , giving collectors , artist , glass dealers and curators an insight into Scottish Glass Making . Glass making in Scotland is in decline but, Scotland is still home to some very well respected international masters in glass, most of the which are working alone from their own studios around Scotland.
The Glass community in the US is much more open than it is here. It has thrived on the openness to share techniques and educate collectors. This has been reflected in the glass sector overall. The US has the most sophisticated market for glass in the world, explains the marketing director for Twists Glass, Sue Hunter.
The journey to Wheaton Glass Village home of the American Museum of glass is not a new experience for many of the makers attending, and much business will be concluded over a few days of the festival.
Glass Master Michael Hunter gave a presentation at this festival two years ago. Networking at an international level has been very beneficial to Michael’s career. He is an ambitious, talented and slightly unorthodox artist who is proficient at blowing large scale works of fine craft. Michael Hunter had his work published in the US twice last year. His ultimate goal is to be represented at SOFA. Recently an offer to work and study on the glass Island of Moreno was a huge compliment to his skills.
Susan says, 'Much of the credit for Twists Glass recent export success is down to the US Marketing Scholarship Programme which gave me an insight into the US marketing culture plus, of course, Michaels talent as an artist'.
